WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: Participation is open to any interested band/orchestra teacher or director seeking to renew their certification or desiring to add an additional endorsement (i.e., a certified band director wishing to become certified as an orchestra adjudicator). If room allows, participation may be granted to attendees that wish to change the level of their current endorsement or who have attended a previous workshop but have yet to acquire certification.
Contact Jennifer Brooks or Mary Lou Boderman with further questions.
If you are not a current member of OBDA, then you will need to register for membership before registering for the adjudication workshop. You can find this on the Membership Registration page.
Prior to participation in the Adjudication Workshop, participants are required to complete the Music Adjudication Test from National Federation of State High School Associations (link below).
ADJUDICATION CERTIFICATION OR RENEWAL UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION Participants wishing to be included on the OBDA Approved Adjudicators List and/ or approved orchestra adjudication list will have the opportunity to submit their critique sheets to the OBDA adjudication committee for consideration. Adjudicators with a minimum of five year experience teaching band or orchestra with demonstrated success at secondary or university level who submit satisfactory sheets will be placed on the lists. All adjudicators must be re-certified at least every 5 years to remain on the list.
PROVIDES USEFUL PRACTICE FOR THE EXPERIENCED OR NOVICE ADJUDICATOR The workshops will include practice adjudication and instruction on the OBDA Concert Band and Orchestra Evaluation System. The OBDA system was adopted for Oregon festivals and contests in 1983. It is used throughout Oregon and in modified form in several other states and Canadian provinces. Participants new to Oregon or anyone not familiar with the system may find an explanation of the system as well as all related materials above under OBDA Adjudication Rubric and Sheets.
PROVIDES HELP IN IMPROVING FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE FOR ALL DIRECTORS Past participants indicate that they received many insights into the process of adjudication and gained practical tips for preparing their bands for festival. Many have had no personal interest in becoming judges but simply want to improve their groups’ performance. Several participants will be active judges already on the OBDA List wishing to "fine tune" their judging skills. All directors regardless of teaching level or experience are welcome. First or second year teachers are particularly invited.
CERTIFICATION OF ORCHESTRA ADJUDICATORS Orchestra excerpts will also be included in the workshop as we continue working with our orchestral colleagues to build their certified adjudicator list.
